Three unidentified Union soldiers seated together and each smoking a cigar make this tintype an unusually candid and spirited example of Civil War portraiture. The image is housed in an embossed gilt frame with a shaped cartouche mat and floral corner ornaments, and dates to approximately 1861 to 1865 based on format and dress. No photographer's imprint is visible.

All three men wear dark uniform jackets with rows of brass buttons and forage caps with visible brass insignia, and the two outer soldiers wear their jackets over striped civilian shirts with sleeves visible at the cuffs. Each man has a cigar clenched between his lips. The center soldier rests his arms across the shoulders of both companions in a relaxed, familiar pose, and a cord or lanyard is visible at the chest of each man. A small red hand-colored detail appears on the jacket of the soldier at left, likely indicating a corps badge or decorative pin.

The deliberate choice to be photographed smoking, with an arm draped casually across comrades, was an act of self-presentation that pushed against the stiff formality typical of studio military portraits of the period. Such images of camaraderie and informality are considerably rarer than standard soldier portraits and offer an intimate glimpse into the social bonds and self-image of men in the ranks.
