A full-length portrait of an unidentified Union soldier commands this quarter plate tintype, set within an ornate embossed gilt frame with a floral and scroll mat and oval window. The image dates to the Civil War era, approximately 1861 to 1865, consistent with the format, military dress, and painted studio backdrop. No photographer's imprint is visible.

The soldier stands at ease in a dark sack coat with a row of brass buttons down the front, light-colored trousers, and ankle boots, with a low-crowned dark felt hat worn squarely on his head. He holds an unsheathed sword vertically at his side with both hands, the butt resting on the ground. Behind him, a painted backdrop depicts a military encampment with rows of white tents, an artillery piece at left, a furled American flag, and a figure with what appears to be a surveying instrument or tripod at right.

Painted camp backdrops were a common studio convention during the Civil War, allowing photographers to place soldiers in a martial setting regardless of location. The inclusion of a cannon, tents, and flag imagery was intended to convey active service and patriotic context, and such backdrops were widely used in Northern studios catering to soldiers heading to or returning from the front.
