The Crow's Nest Signal Tower erected by the Union Army on the James River, Virginia in 1864 is documented in this CDV, identified by penciled inscription on the reverse, with no photographer's imprint visible. The tall iron or timber lattice observation tower, with multiple workers visible at various levels during its construction or active use, represents a rare surviving photographic record of Union Army signal corps infrastructure during the Petersburg Campaign.

The tower rises in a tapered lattice framework of crossed diagonal bracing across multiple levels, with figures visible on at least four platforms at different heights and a platform or observation post at the summit. Military tents are visible at the base of the tower in the lower portion of the frame, and bare early-spring trees surround the structure on all sides. The tower's considerable height relative to the surrounding tree canopy made it effective as a signal and observation point overlooking the James River corridor.

The Crow's Nest Signal Tower on the James River was used by Union forces during the 1864 Overland and Petersburg campaigns to relay signal communications and observe Confederate movements along the river. Signal towers of this type were a critical component of Union Army communications infrastructure and were erected at strategic high points throughout the Virginia theater. Photographs of standing signal towers in the field are among the rarer categories of Civil War military photography.

The reverse bears a penciled inscription reading "Crow's Nest Signal Tower, 1864, Union Army, James River, VA" and a price notation of "$50.00." No photographer's imprint is present.
