Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

One of the most electrifying documents of the Paris Commune, this albumen-print stereoview captures Place Vendôme in the immediate aftermath of May 16, 1871, the day the Commune decreed the demolition of the Vendôme Column and had it sawn down. The column had been erected by Napoleon I to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz and stood as one of the great symbols of imperial France. The card mount is printed in red with decorative military motifs and dated "Paris 1870 1871," placing it firmly within the commemorative stereoview series documenting the Franco-Prussian War and Commune period. No photographer's imprint appears on the card face, though the image shares visual and stylistic characteristics with the contemporaneous Paris Commune documentation produced by multiple Parisian studios active in the summer of 1871.

The view shows Place Vendôme from street level, with the fallen column's massive bronze-clad shaft visible on the ground amid debris, still encircled by wooden scaffolding and diagonal support timbers used during the demolition. Two elegantly dressed male figures stand in the foreground beside an ornate gaslit street lamp, while the Haussmann-era facades of the square extend behind the wreckage. Flags or pennants are visible at the tops of the scaffolding poles, and the relief-covered surface of the toppled shaft is legible in the middle ground.

The Commune had declared the column a "symbol of brutal force and false glory" and ordered its destruction; on May 16, before a great crowd, the column was sawn at its base and crashed to the ground. After the suppression of the Commune, the decision was made to rebuild the column, and by 1874 it was re-erected at the center of Place Vendôme with a copy of the original statue at its apex.

The card is numbered "26" and titled in printed letterpress along the lower front border: "Colonne de la Place Vendôme, Abattue" (Column of the Place Vendôme, Toppled). The reverse bears a pencil inscription reading "Property of M. P. Sherlock."
