Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

This albumen stereoview belongs to the published series "Insurrection de Paris," photographed by Q.V. in Paris, and documents one of the most consequential moments in nineteenth-century French history. The photographer behind the initials Q.V. has been identified as Jules Hippolyte Queval. The image was made in 1871, shortly after the suppression of the Paris Commune, and records the gutted facade of the Hôtel de Ville before any reconstruction had begun.

A uniformed soldier stands at ease amid a foreground barricade of wooden barrels and piled stone rubble, serving as a human scale against the devastation behind him. The Hôtel de Ville rises across the open square, its arched window bays stripped bare, its roofline collapsed into jagged masonry stumps and exposed chimney towers, with mature trees along the forecourt untouched and in full leaf, heightening the contrast between the natural and the ruined. The yellow card mount bears the series title and photographer credit printed in red ink vertically along both left and right edges.

The Hôtel de Ville had served as the headquarters of the Paris Commune from March 1871 and was destroyed by fire during the Versailles government's suppression of the uprising in May 1871. Paris's town hall was subsequently rebuilt in a luxurious neo-Renaissance style between 1874 and 1882. Stereoviews from the "Insurrection de Paris" series were among the most widely circulated photographic documents of the Commune's aftermath, reaching a broad public audience hungry for evidence of the destruction.

Reverse bears a printed paper label reading: "INSURRECTION DE PARIS. / Ruines de l'Hôtel-de-Ville." (Ruins of the Hôtel de Ville), with a pencil notation at lower center reading "6/05/11 LOBEAU Eb."
