Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

In the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune of 1870–1871, several photographers documented the city's destruction, focusing on buildings burned during the uprising. This albumen-print stereoview belongs to the "Ruines de Paris et Environs" series published by Adolphe Block, identified on the mount as "A. Block Editeur, Paris." Block operated as publisher and editor in Paris, with the series title and his imprint printed vertically on both sides of the orange card mount.

The view looks along Rue Royale toward a row of Haussmann-era apartment buildings whose facades have been gutted by fire, with upper-story windows blown out, ironwork balconies hanging loose, and roofline chimneys partially collapsed. A massive pile of rubble and broken stone occupies the foreground pavement, and leafless plane trees line the boulevard between the debris field and the shuttered ground-floor shops below the damaged facades.

The fires of the Paris Commune refer to the widespread destruction of buildings during "Bloody Week" of 21–28 May 1871, when government forces from Versailles recaptured Paris from the Communards, most of the fires having been set between 22 and 26 May. Rue Royale, situated near the Place de la Concorde, was among the streets where buildings burned during the Commune.

Inscribed in pencil in the upper right of the reverse: "rue Royale" (Rue Royale). A later dealer or cataloger notation appears in the lower right of the reverse: "DCOAI / 4/27/03 Eb."
