Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

The fire-gutted facade of the Palais-Royal fills both stereo frames of this albumen silver print, issued by A. Block Editeur of Paris as part of the "Ruines de Paris et Environs" series documenting destruction left by the Paris Commune of 1871. The Palais-Royal was burned during the 1871 Paris Commune, and Block moved quickly to publish stereoviews of the most significant ruins for a public hungry for documentary records of the catastrophe. The orange-mounted card carries the series title and publisher's imprint printed vertically in letterpress on the recto borders.

The view looks across rooftops toward the palace's upper story, where a sculpted classical pediment with figural relief survives largely intact above pilasters and tall windows whose interiors are gutted and open to the sky. Chimney stacks punctuate the skyline behind the damaged mansard level, and collapsed or displaced roofing material is visible along the upper parapet. The paired albumen prints are sharp and well-exposed, resolving fine architectural detail throughout both frames.

For 72 days, from 18 March to 28 May 1871, the Parisian insurgents of the Commune attempted to overthrow the nascent Third Republic before being violently defeated during the Semaine sanglante. The Communards burned several major public buildings of Paris, including the Palais-Royal. After the Commune was suppressed, the Palais-Royal was rebuilt, making photographs like this one among the only visual records of its ruined state.

The reverse bears a period ink inscription in cursive script reading "Palais Royal," confirming the subject. The publisher's series title "Ruines de Paris & Environs" and imprint "A. Block Editeur, Paris" are letterpress-printed on the recto mount borders.
