Sixth plate daguerreotype of a young man dressed as a Zouave cadet, standing beside a chair and with a short sword on his hip. The oval mat is stamped “ANSON,” indicating the photographer. Circa 1855–1860. The young man wears a kepi, and open jacket over a light shirt. His loose trousers gathered at the waist with a wide red tinted sash. He stands upright with one hand resting on the back of a curved wooden chair. The studio setting includes a plain backdrop and patterned floor covering. The Zouave style originated with French North African regiments and became widely adopted in mid-19th century military and cadet uniforms, including several American units during the Civil War era.
