Our September 2026 auction is anchored by two remarkable private collections, together making up about half the sale, alongside a broader selection of consignments spanning early photography, Civil War material, and vernacular imagery. The Soffer Collection, built with an eye for rarity and historical significance, is particularly strong in vernacular portraiture, Native American photographs, and Iowa Civil War imagery. The Palmer, Massachusetts collection, much of it found at Brimfield, centers on maker-marked daguerreotypes from the golden age of the American daguerreian studio.

A binder collection of approximately 80 or more assorted real photo postcards and printed postcards, dating from roughly the 1900s through the 1930s, unified by a strong thematic focus on novelty studio photography, amusement parks, and early transportation. The majority of the photographic cards are real photo postcards produced by commercial studios at fairgrounds, amusement parks, and boardwalk concessions, where patrons posed before painted or constructed backdrops simulating automobiles, trains, aircraft, steamships, and hot air balloons. Identified studio imprints visible on reverses include Photo by Coan of St. Paul, Cornell Studios of Detroit, Cornet's Photo Studio of Dayton, The Modern Studio of Philadelphia, The Charles Studio of Atlantic City, and the Electric Studio of Dubuque, Iowa, among others.

Cards depict couples, families, and groups posed before automobile cutouts, locomotive frontals numbered 1876, steamship sets labeled White City, aircraft backdrops including one marked Spirit of St. Lou, and hot air balloon gondola props labeled in German. Additional subject matter includes a cycling postcard captioned "Cycling just suits me," a Barrel of Fun novelty card, a Riverview Exposition Chicago back, a Sioux Falls Post No. 15 group drill team photograph, a card marked "Returning from France" with three male subjects before a biplane prop, a "Joy Riding" comic automobile card, and an On Lake Erie novelty boat card. Several cards carry handwritten messages, green and red postage stamps, and postmarks ranging from 1909 through the early 1920s. One card reverse is inscribed with a German-language Christmas greeting dated December 18; another carries a French-language caption beginning "Si tu partais des fleurs" (If you were to leave with flowers).
