A tall cylindrical vase from Rookwood Pottery is decorated with a Native American riverside scene under the firm's Vellum glaze. Two figures stand beside a canoe at the water's edge, framed by dark trees against a glowing sky. The piece was painted by Edward T. Hurley in 1911, shape number 1869.

The sky shifts from teal green at the crown to warm pink and orange near the horizon. Dark silhouetted tree trunks rise across the upper body, branches reaching into the colored sky. The lower third is mottled in deep green and brown, suggesting the riverbank. The parchment like Vellum glaze softens the scene into a hazy, atmospheric impression.

Edward Timothy Hurley (1869-1950) was one of Rookwood's most celebrated decorators, particularly within the Vellum line introduced in 1904. His landscapes, rendered in this misty, parchment toned glaze, are among the most sought after Rookwood works, and several depict Native American subjects along wooded riverbanks, as seen here.

The vase stands 15 inches high. There are no repairs, it's been examined with a black light, only faint crazing. The base bears the Rookwood flame mark, the Roman numeral XI for 1911, shape number 1869, the V glaze designation, and Hurley's incised cipher. This vase appears in the earlier Grueby group photograph, shown for scale only.
