A wide shallow bowl by Edwin and Mary Scheier is decorated with sgraffito figures incised through a dark glossy glaze. The Scheiers worked as studio potters in Durham, New Hampshire, where Mary threw the forms and Edwin carried out much of the figural decoration. The piece dates to the mid twentieth century.

A winged humanoid figure occupies the upper portion of the interior, arms raised and ending in open hands, with curved hook like forms extending from the elbows. Below, a large face with spiral eyes and radiating lines of hair fills the lower half of the bowl. The incised lines cut through the dark glaze to reveal a lighter ground beneath. The exterior and rim are covered in a mottled tan and ochre glaze.

Edwin and Mary Scheier were largely self-taught studio potters who worked together for nearly seven decades, first in Virginia and later in New Hampshire, where they also taught at the University of New Hampshire. Edwin's decoration often drew on his interest in mythology and anthropology, populating Mary's thrown forms with stylized figures, faces, and animals rendered in sgraffito.

The bowl measures 9 inches in diameter. The underside bears the incised signature Scheier.
