Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867) was one of the leading figures of French Neoclassical painting and a dominant influence in nineteenth-century academic art. His portraits and history paintings were widely admired during his lifetime, and photographic likenesses of the artist were produced near the end of his career.
