This carte de visite photograph shows a seated woman and a standing Union soldier in uniform. The image is a studio portrait on a standard CDV mount, dating to circa 1863–1865. The mount bears the imprint of Newman, photographer, Hornellsville, New York.
The soldier wears a dark military frock coat with shoulder straps and rows of buttons, standing beside the seated woman dressed in a dark, full-skirted dress with fitted bodice. Both are posed formally against a plain studio backdrop with patterned flooring.
The reverse includes a decorative printed imprint reading “Newman, Photographer, Hornellsville, N.Y.” and a two-cent Internal Revenue stamp affixed at lower left with a cancellation mark. Handwritten notations appear along the lower edge.
