Our September 2026 auction is anchored by two remarkable private collections, together making up about half the sale, alongside a broader selection of consignments spanning early photography, Civil War material, and vernacular imagery. The Soffer Collection, built with an eye for rarity and historical significance, is particularly strong in vernacular portraiture, Native American photographs, and Iowa Civil War imagery. The Palmer, Massachusetts collection, much of it found at Brimfield, centers on maker-marked daguerreotypes from the golden age of the American daguerreian studio.

A large accumulation of approximately 100 CDVs, cabinet cards, and related card-format photographs housed in plastic-sleeve binder pages spans a broad geographic and temporal range, with nearly every example retaining a printed photographer's backmark. Studios represented include John Hart of London (171A and 181 City Road, E.C., and 275 Leytonstone Road), John Avery of Upper Holloway and Kingsland, N. London, Randall Photographer of 220 Woodward Ave. Detroit, J.B. Gallagher of Black River Falls Wisconsin, Hyde Park Photograph Gallery of Scranton Pennsylvania with Henry Frey as photo artist, Atkinson's Railroad Gallery of Orion Illinois, Small and Zivney of Milwaukee, Hebbel of 409 N. Gay St. Baltimore, C.G. Blatt Traveling Artist, Finley and Jeanes New Ferrotype Gallery of Allentown Pennsylvania, Showman and Read of Portland Michigan, and W.J. Sturgeon of Zanesville Ohio, among many others.

Subjects across the group include individual portraits of men, women, and children, sibling and parent-child groupings, bust-length ovals, and full-length standing figures in period dress ranging from hoop-skirted Civil War-era gowns to late Victorian suiting. Several cards are reversed, blank, or carry only advertising reverses without a photographic image on the front, functioning as studio promotional specimens. A Swedish CDV bearing the Jönköping imprint of Stralberg extends the geographic reach of the collection to Scandinavia.

The collection includes a number of pure advertising or specimen reverses with no photograph present, as well as a handful of gem-size tintypes mounted to CDV stock from Finley and Jeanes. Pencil notations appearing on several sleeves reference catalog numbers and dates consistent with a prior collector's organization system.
