A patented equine toe weight device photographed as a product advertisement appears in this CDV issued by H. Satterwhite of Martinsville, Indiana, with the invention date and inventor's name printed on a placard photographed alongside the object, dated by the patent notice to February 26, 1878. The card was produced as a trade advertisement distributed to promote the device, with the full product description and pricing printed on the reverse in place of a photographer's imprint.

The device is shown mounted on a cast or molded horse hoof form, displaying a dark rubberized or leather boot-shaped hoof cap fitted with a metal keystone attachment mechanism at the toe, secured by a flat metal strap and fastener. The object is photographed against a plain light background, angled to show the attachment hardware clearly. A printed placard below the object reads "H. Satterwhite, Martinsville, Indiana. Patented Feb. 26, 1878."

Toe weights were widely used in the training and showing of gaited horses during the nineteenth century to alter stride and gait characteristics, and the market for improved attachment devices was active and competitive. Satterwhite's patent claim centered on an all-metal construction requiring no leather, rubber, or other materials subject to expansion from moisture, and his design was intended for use on both shod and bare-footed horses.

The reverse bears a full printed advertisement headed "A New Invention," describing the Double-Tongue Key-Stone Metallic Attachment Toe Weight for Horses, pricing it at five dollars per set, and directing correspondence to H. Satterwhite, Patentee, Martinsville, Indiana, with a penciled catalog notation reading "0cdv154."
