Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A narrow commercial street in Frankfurt's historic Altstadt is the subject of this albumen-print CDV, likely produced in the 1860s or 1870s when such architectural views of the city's medieval core were widely documented. The perspective draws the eye deep into a long canyon of multi-story half-timbered facades, their overhanging upper floors cantilevered progressively outward in the characteristic Frankfurt manner, with slated or plastered exteriors above ground-floor sandstone bases. No photographer's imprint is visible.

Along the left-hand row of buildings, shop merchandise hangs at the storefronts and display tables extend onto the cobbled pavement below awnings. A gas street lamp projects from a bracket at upper right, and a second lamp is visible mid-street. The stone cobbling of the roadway, worn smooth, recedes in a strong diagonal toward a pale, hazy sky at the vanishing point.

Frankfurt's old-town commercial streets, lined with gabled half-timbered structures dating from the medieval period through the Baroque, were among the most-photographed architectural subjects in 19th-century Germany. Streets of this character, including the Fahrgasse and Bendergasse, were densely built with multi-level, multi-cantilevered timber-framed houses and served as popular motifs for photographers and artists alike until their destruction in the 1944 Allied air raids.
