Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A CDV-format photograph reproduces a dramatic illustrated scene of street violence set during the Paris Commune of 1871, depicting the chaos of open-air gunfire in a Parisian boulevard. The artist's signature "Bonnard" appears in the lower right of the image, identifying the illustrator who created the underlying drawing that was then photographed and issued in CDV form. The reverse bears a handwritten inscription attributing the card to a publisher or vendor identified as "A. du Pierret, 2 rue Cadet, Paris," alongside a blue copyright stamp reading "Deposé" (registered), indicating the image was formally registered to protect against unauthorized reproduction.

In the foreground, three bodies lie sprawled across the broad boulevard pavement, while a central figure in dark coat and white clerical dress rushes forward in clear distress, arms outstretched. Muzzle flashes discharge from a group of armed figures in the middle distance, and a file of soldiers stands in tight formation at the right edge of the scene. A fleeing woman in light dress appears at far left, and the backdrop is formed by continuous shopfront facades bearing legible French commercial signs, including "Maison de Nou..." and "Habillements Nouv..." and "Toiles Gros et Détail."

The scene aligns with the imagery produced in the immediate aftermath of the Semaine sanglante (Bloody Week) of May 21 to 28, 1871, during which the Versaillais suppressed the Paris Commune with widespread street fighting and summary executions. During the Bloody Week, approximately 20,000 Communards were killed. CDVs reproducing illustrated news scenes were a common commercial format in this period, issued rapidly for public sale and registered with the French authorities to establish copyright. The rue Cadet address connects this card to Paris's 9th arrondissement, a district with a concentration of photographic and publishing trade activity in the 1870s.

The reverse is inscribed in ink "A. du Pierret / 2 rue Cadet, Paris" and bears a blue "Déposé" (registered) stamp in the lower right corner. No photographer's imprint is present.
