Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Hippolyte Jouvin published his celebrated series of over two hundred stereoscopic photographs titled "Vues instantanées de Paris" in 1863, and this albumen stereoview is No. 91 from that series, depicting the Palais des Tuileries from an elevated vantage point along the rue de Rivoli. Jouvin, a French photographer active in Paris from 1825 to 1889, was a pioneer in stereoscopic photography and one of the first photographers to employ the wet collodion process. The yellow card mount, printed series title, and number are consistent with Jouvin's documented production style.

The view looks along the palace's north facade, its multi-story Classical elevation filling the center of the frame, with mansard rooflines and dormered windows visible above a balustraded garden wall. Horse-drawn carriages move along the broad street below, figures on foot populate the pavement, and a row of clipped trees lines the garden side of the roadway. The perspective is taken from a high window or balcony, lending the composition a sweeping, bird's-eye quality that animates the scene with mid-day street life.

The Tuileries Palace stood on the right bank of the Seine as a magnificent western extension of the Louvre and served as the residence of French monarchs from Henry IV to Napoleon III. During the Paris Commune in 1871, Communards set fire to the palace, gutting its interior, and the ruins stood until their demolition in 1883. This stereoview therefore records the palace in its last years of intact splendor, before the fire rendered it irretrievably lost.

Printed in the lower margin of the recto: "No. 91., Palais des Tuileries a Paris, Vue Instantanée. (2)" (No. 91, Tuileries Palace in Paris, Instantaneous View. [2]). The reverse bears an ink inscription reading "J.R.L." and "June 1865" (June 1865). A hand-applied red number is visible at the left edge of the recto mount.
