Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A female gymnast or theatrical performer holds a full side split on the studio floor, her elaborately costumed figure commanding the entire frame of this albumen cabinet card produced by M. Filderman at 48, Rue Laffitte, Paris, almost certainly in the 1880s or 1890s. The dramatic studio setting, the studied pose, and the ornate stage costume all point to a professional performance artist working within the vibrant Parisian cabaret and variety-theatre circuit of the Belle Époque period.

The subject wears a low-cut, heavily embellished bodice adorned with floral appliqués and ruffled trim, paired with a billowing skirt of patterned fabric spread wide across the floor around her extended legs. Atop her curled dark hair sits an enormous feathered and ruffled hat. One gloved arm bends dramatically at the chin in a theatrical gesture, while the other rests on her hip, and ballet slippers are just visible at the ends of her fully extended legs.

The Rue Laffitte in Paris's 9th arrondissement was a noted address for portrait studios catering to theatrical clients in the late nineteenth century, making Filderman's carte well suited to the documentation of stage and variety performers. The reverse bears the studio's printed imprint alongside a decorative vignette.

Reverse printed in red: "M. Filderman, Photographe, 48 Rue Laffitte, Paris / On Opère tous les Jours et par tous les temps, de 9h. du Matin à 6h. du Soir." (Open every day and in all weather, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.); "Les clichés sont conservés." (Negatives are kept on file.); printer's credit at foot: "B.P. Grimaud-Nacivet, Paris"; pencil numeral "23" at lower left corner.
