Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

H. H. Campbell, an aeronaut and gymnast performing with Showers & Co. Imperial Shows, is portrayed in this albumen cabinet card, produced at the Graves studio in Stoneboro, Pennsylvania, most likely during the 1890s when balloon-and-parachute acts were among the most sensational attractions on the traveling show circuit. Campbell poses before an elaborately painted promotional banner that served as his professional calling card, advertising the full sequence of his aerial act to fairground and circus audiences across the region.

The banner behind Campbell is divided into labeled vignettes depicting each stage of the performance: "The Balloon," "Leaving the Balloon," "Preparing for the Leap," and "The Parachute Open," with a collapsing balloon panel visible at upper left and a painted crowd scene below. Campbell himself wears a sleeveless gymnastic costume with a decorative beaded or fringed bodice and cropped shorts, his bare legs extended as he reclines in a wicker-framed studio chair, his expression direct and composed.

Balloon-and-parachute acts of this type were a fixture of late-nineteenth-century traveling shows, with the aeronaut hanging from a trapeze bar attached beneath a loose parachute connected to the balloon, often performing acrobatics as the balloon rose. Once sufficient altitude was reached, the aeronaut would disconnect the chute and free-fall before the parachute inflated and carried him to the ground.

The photographer's name "Graves" appears inscribed at lower center of the image. The mount bears a handwritten ink inscription below the photograph reading: "Truly Yours, H. H. Campbell / With Showers & Co. Imperial Shows," with the studio imprint reading "Graves, Stoneboro, PA" and noting an "Extra Finish" mount.
