Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Two young athletes in matching athletic kit pose together with a large engraved silver trophy cup in this pair of cabinet cards, both produced at the Harrow studio of Hills & Saunders, one dated 1887 and the other 1888. Hills & Saunders was one of the leading Victorian photographic firms, appointed as photographers to members of the royal family and given a Royal Warrant as photographers to Queen Victoria in 1867. The consecutive years and differing sitters suggest an annual prize or competition, with each card commemorating that year's winning pair.

Both photographs show two young men dressed in white short-sleeved athletic jerseys with a dark chest stripe, close-fitted dark trousers, and dark stockings, consistent with late Victorian gymnasium or athletic competition dress. The trophy, a substantial two-handled cup with relief engraving around its body, is prominently displayed between the subjects in each image, held jointly by the pair. In the 1887 card, the seated figure crosses his arms across his chest in a confident pose; in the 1888 card, the composition is more upright and formal, with the trophy cradled by the standing figure at right.

Hills & Saunders maintained studios at leading schools including Harrow, as well as Eton, Oxford, Cambridge, and Sandhurst, making them the preeminent photographers of Britain's athletic and academic elite throughout the Victorian era. The studio's presence at Harrow School placed it at the center of competitive school sport, and trophy portraits of this type were a standard commission following inter-house or inter-school athletic contests.

The reverse of each card bears the Hills & Saunders Harrow imprint with the Royal Warrant device and branch locations. The 1887 card shows no negative number recorded; the 1888 card is inscribed in pencil with negative number 12153 and position number 6, and carries a penciled "D" below the date on both reverses.
