A large steam vessel is shown being lowered through a canal lock in this albumen print, circa 1875 to 1890, with a public park, circular fountain basin, and residential streetscape visible in the middle distance beyond the lock works. The caption is printed directly on the image along the lower edge. No photographer's imprint is visible on this example.

The lock chamber walls are constructed of dressed stone, with a small stone locktender's building at the lock side and spectators gathered along the upper lock wall to observe the vessel's passage; additional figures are visible on the vessel's deck. A telegraph or utility pole rises prominently at left, and a row of two-story residential and commercial buildings lines the far side of the park. The steam vessel's masts, rigging, and hull extend beyond the right edge of the frame.

The caption printed on the image reads "Vessel in Locks Water Lowering Fountain & Park," identifying both the operation depicted and the surrounding civic amenities, suggesting this view was produced as a topographic souvenir of a specific canal and lock installation, most likely along a Great Lakes shipping route or major inland waterway where steam vessel traffic and public parks coexisted in an urban setting during the latter decades of the nineteenth century.
