The Giant Forest Branch of the Tulare County Free Library is documented in this gelatin silver print mounted on brown board and captioned in type below the image, dated June 1926. The small cedar-shingle building was erected by the Sequoia National Park administration specifically for library use and is shown here newly opened, with a group of children and adults posed on the front platform in the shadow of the surrounding giant sequoias. The sign above the open door reads "Tulare Co. Library / Giant Forest Branch."
The one-room gabled structure is clad in cedar shingles with exposed timber framing and a covered entry platform; a picnic table is visible at left beneath the trees. Four children are gathered at the entrance, two holding stacks of books; a man in a plaid jacket converses with a woman in a dark suit in the doorway, and a young girl in a dress and knee socks stands to the left also holding a book. The massive trunks of giant sequoias rise directly behind the building.
The Giant Forest Branch represented an early and distinctive effort to extend public library service into a national park setting, serving both park employees and summer visitors in one of the most remote communities in California. The Tulare County Free Libraries partnership with the National Park Service to provide this facility in 1926 was a notable moment in the history of both rural library outreach and national park visitor services.
