Full-length albumen boudoir card portrait of an elderly bearded itinerant vendor or peddler, photographed standing before a painted studio backdrop and rustic prop railing. The man is dressed in heavy boots and a brimmed hat and carries a large assortment of goods suspended from straps across his shoulders and chest, including bundles, small packages, and what appear to be carved wooden walking sticks or canes. Two long staffs rest at his sides, reinforcing the impression of a traveling stick-seller or peddler posed in occupational costume. The photograph likely dates to the 1880s–1890s.
The mount is printed on the reverse for J. S. Mitchell, Photographer, Boston, Massachusetts, with a branch at Old Orchard Beach, Maine, indicating production during the period when seasonal resort photography flourished along the Maine coast. Mitchell advertised portraiture and views from Mackey’s Florida Building at Old Orchard Beach, a well-known late nineteenth-century tourist destination where novelty vendors and itinerant craftsmen were common subjects for souvenir photography.
