Tintype portrait of Eddie Petherbridge, a young Virginia Confederate soldier, seated in a studio setting and wearing a Confederate military uniform consisting of a light-colored jacket with standing collar, decorative buttons, and insignia, worn over a dark vest and tie. The image is a tintype, dating to the Civil War period based on uniform style, photographic process, and later documentary inscriptions. The subject is identified by accompanying material. A stamped photographer’s imprint is present on the verso of the tintype, reading an illegible photographer in Baltimore, MD.

Accompanying the tintype is a cabinet card copy photograph depicting the same sitter in the same pose and uniform. The cabinet card bears the printed imprint “W. F. McKecknie, Photo., Toledo, O.” and represents a later photographic reproduction of the earlier tintype, a common postwar practice used to preserve and circulate images of deceased soldiers among family members.

The verso of the cabinet card includes handwritten inscriptions identifying the sitter as Eddie Petherbridge, son of Dr. J. F. Petherbridge, with a note stating that he died at the age of 20. Additional handwriting reads “Mrs. C. H. Petherbridge, Richmond Va., from Emily Petherbridge,” firmly establishing family provenance and Virginia residence. Together, the tintype and cabinet card form a documented Civil War memorial grouping connecting an original wartime portrait with a later commemorative copy.
