E. & H. T. Anthony published this albumen stereoview of the White House grounds, south side, as part of their "Stereoscopic Views in Washington City, D.C." series, catalog number 1308. The view dates to the Civil War era, consistent with the manuscript inscription on the reverse reading "June 11th 1864," placing it among the earliest photographic documentation of the Executive Mansion's landscape. The card was retailed through J. W. Queen & Co., 924 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia.

The composition looks north across open, bare-earthed grounds toward the south facade of the White House, its neoclassical cornice and colonnade visible through a screen of mature deciduous trees stripped of leaves. A curved carriage path sweeps through the middle distance, flanked by an ornamental iron bench and low shrub plantings, while the foreground shows rough, unimproved ground typical of wartime Washington.

E. & H. T. Anthony, operating from 501 Broadway, New York, was the preeminent publisher of American stereoviews during the 1860s and distributed thousands of Washington views drawn from negatives made by photographers in and around the capital during the Civil War years.

The reverse bears a printed publisher's label identifying the series and title, the catalog number 1308, and the Queen & Co. retailer imprint. A manuscript inscription in ink reads "June 11th 1864." A handwritten notation in red ink on the left edge of the recto reads "N. 140."
