Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

The Rue de Rivoli, one of Haussmann-era Paris's most celebrated thoroughfares, is captured in this albumen print stereoview from an elevated vantage point overlooking a busy street corner. The paired images present a broad urban panorama consistent with the numbered series format popular among Parisian stereographic publishers of the 1860s and 1870s, with no photographer's imprint visible on the mount. The card stock and square-cornered format place the photograph firmly within that decade.

The view looks down onto a curved intersection where multi-story stone apartment buildings with mansard rooftops and iron balconies fill the frame, their ground floors lined with canvas awnings sheltering shop fronts beneath. Horse-drawn carriages occupy the intersection below, pedestrians in period dress populate the sidewalks, and a cluster of mature trees borders the lower foreground, suggesting the proximity of the Tuileries garden.

The Rue de Rivoli was one of the most celebrated arteries of Paris, renowned for its elegant arcaded buildings and its position bordering a famous park, offering elevated views toward the Tuileries. The image captures the street's commercial and residential character at its height, with the Haussmann building typology fully realized in the rows of uniform façades stretching to the horizon.

The recto bears the printed caption "No. 19, Portion de la Rue de Rivoli, à Paris" (No. 19, Section of the Rue de Rivoli, in Paris) centered below the image pair. The reverse is unmarked except for a penciled notation reading "30/" in the upper right corner and additional penciled notations reading "2/17/10," "LOBCFZ," and "Eb" at lower center.
