Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Hippolyte Jouvin, the French photographer and publisher of stereoscopic photographs, issued a series of over two hundred instantaneous views of Paris, and this albumen stereoview belongs to that celebrated "Vue Instantanée" series. The "instantanée" designation refers to the fast exposure times Jouvin employed, which allowed pedestrians and vehicles to be captured mid-motion rather than rendered as ghostly blurs or absent entirely. The cream card mount carries no publisher's imprint on the reverse, though the numbered series title printed on the recto is consistent with Jouvin's documented production.

The view, taken from an elevated vantage point overlooking the Boulevards Saint-Martin and Saint-Denis in the 10th arrondissement, shows horse-drawn fiacres and pedestrians crowding the sidewalks, with the Porte Saint-Martin prominent in the foreground and the Porte Saint-Denis visible further along the boulevard. Awning-fronted commercial buildings line both sides of the wide Haussmann-era thoroughfare, and a horse-drawn omnibus occupies the center of the broad intersection beneath the arch.

The Porte Saint-Denis stands at the crossing of the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis with the Boulevard de Bonne-Nouvelle and the Boulevard Saint-Denis, one of the grand ceremonial gates of Paris, its triumphal arch form unmistakable against the canyon of Second Empire façades. The animated street scene, frozen by Jouvin's rapid-exposure technique, documents the pulse of the Grands Boulevards at the height of their commercial and social importance.

The recto bears the printed legend in the lower margin: "No. 29., PANORAMA DES BOULEVARTS, À PARIS., VUE INSTANTANÉE" ("No. 29., Panorama of the Boulevards, in Paris., Instantaneous View"). The reverse is plain, with penciled notations reading "2/14/10," "LOABHZ," and "Fb" along the lower margin, and "80?" in the upper right corner.
