The image shows Dickens standing in a studio pose wearing a dark coat and vest with watch chain, resting one hand on a chair. The printed copyright line indicates entry in 1868. Charles Dickens was a major English novelist and social critic of the Victorian period, known for works including Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and A Christmas Carol. Published stereoview portraits such as this were widely sold as collectible likenesses of prominent literary figures during the late nineteenth century.
