Gelatin silver stereoview depicting American humorist and writer Will Rogers seated among members of the press, identified in the printed caption as “Will Rogers, Humorist, Was in the Press Section for Both Conventions, Chicago.” Published by Keystone View Company, with publisher’s imprint printed along the margins listing Meadville, Pennsylvania; New York; Chicago; and London. The photograph shows Rogers seated at a crowded press table with papers and writing materials before him, apparently holding a pen or pencil, while reporters and officials sit behind. A sign reading “California” is visible in the background, indicating the press seating area at a national political convention.
The image documents Rogers in his well known role as journalist and political commentator. By the early twentieth century he had become one of America’s most widely read newspaper columnists as well as a popular stage and film personality, noted for his humor and commentary on public affairs. His presence in the press gallery at the Chicago conventions reflects his active involvement in reporting and interpreting national politics for a broad audience.
Gray Keystone mount with series number 32796 printed along the lower margin and Keystone View Company imprint along both sides. Early twentieth century.
