Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

Place Vendôme dominates this albumen stereoview, photographed from street level along the approach to the square, with the single Colonne Vendôme rising prominently at center and rendered twice across the paired frames. Debitte & Hervé, a French studio active in the 1860s and 1870s, published the card under their imprint as the Photographic Company at 170, rue de Rivoli, Paris, printed in period typography along both vertical borders of the bright yellow mount. The stereoscopic composition is carefully balanced, with the column framed between the Haussmann-era façades lining the square on either side.

The column stands at center-frame against a pale sky, its spiraling bronze bas-reliefs visible along the shaft, surmounted by a figure at the summit. Gas street lamps of the period occupy the foreground and middle ground, and several ghosted pedestrian figures appear near the base of the column, blurred by long exposure. The surrounding Place Vendôme buildings present their uniform classical facades, with arched windows, balustrades, and mansard rooflines extending across the background.

Located at the center of Place Vendôme, the Colonne Vendôme stands as a striking emblem of French history and imperial ambition, commissioned by Napoleon I between 1806 and 1810 to commemorate the victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. The column was torn down during the Commune of Paris in 1871 and reconstructed to its current grandeur thereafter, placing the stereoview's date of production firmly in the period of Debitte & Hervé's active years, before the column's fall. The column's continuous ribbon of bas-relief bronze plates was made from 1,200 cannons taken from the combined armies of Russia and Austria during that battle.

Inscribed in ink on the verso: "Colonne Vendôme" ("Vendôme Column"). Additional pencil notations on the reverse read "6/11/11" and "10 ECZ K."
