Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A bird's-eye albumen stereoview captures a sweeping view along the Seine in Paris, taken from an elevated vantage point on the Right Bank looking downstream toward the Pont des Arts. The yellow-mounted card is a standard paper stereoview format, and the image dates to the 1860s based on the mount color, card format, and the visible state of the riverfront structures. No photographer's imprint appears on the card.

In the foreground, two floating river establishments are prominently visible, their shed roofs and smokestack clearly legible, with painted signage identifying them as the "Ecole" and "Bains Henri IV," the latter being one of the well-known public bathing establishments moored along the Seine. A latticed iron footbridge spans across the river in the middle distance, and the stately facades of the Louvre complex rise along the north bank beyond it, while barges and flat-bottomed river craft are moored along both quays beneath an open, pale sky.

The Bains Henri IV were among the most prominent of the floating public bathhouses that lined the Seine from the seventeenth century onward, offering bathing services to Parisians at a time when private domestic bathing facilities were uncommon. Their presence in the foreground of this view documents a now-vanished feature of the Parisian riverscape that disappeared entirely in the early twentieth century.

The reverse is inscribed in pencil as "Mrs. Harding" with a notation along the right edge reading "sent in ants Paris," and bears a catalog notation "LOCDDZ Eb" and a date notation "2/12/10" in pencil at the lower margin.
