Historic carte de visite photograph of the famed Elk-Horn Chair crafted by Seth Kinman and presented to President Abraham Lincoln in 1864. Composed entirely of polished elk antlers, the chair was one of Kinman's elaborate and theatrical gifts to U.S. presidents, designed to curry favor and secure federal employment. Photographed and published by Mathew Brady, the image was copyrighted by Kinman himself, as noted in the printed caption. A rich visual artifact at the intersection of frontier myth-making, presidential memorabilia, and self-promotion, this image also documents one of the more bizarre furnishings ever delivered to the White House. Brady's National Photographic Portrait Gallery imprint appears on verso.
