We are pleased to announce our next auction, featuring approximately 200 individual lots drawn from a diverse and compelling range of 19th- and early 20th-century photography. This sale focuses on vernacular images, photographs created not as formal studio portraits or elite commissions, but as direct, unscripted records of lived experience. These are objects made by and for everyday people, preserving moments of intimacy, labor, travel, performance, identity, and loss.

Remarkable carte de visite portrait of Seth Kinman, the legendary California hunter, frontiersman, and self-styled showman who famously presented President Abraham Lincoln with an elk-horn chair. Kinman is shown in full frontier regalia, holding a long rifle and wearing a fringed buckskin outfit and animal fur cap with tails. The image is captioned below: “Seth Kinman, California Hunter and Trapper, who presented President Lincoln with the Elk-Horn Chair,” and bears the copyright line, “Entered according to Act of Congress by Seth Kinman, in the year 1864.” Verso imprint of Brady’s National Photographic Portrait Galleries, Washington, D.C. and New York. One of the most iconic CDVs of the Civil War era, merging celebrity portraiture, political history, and Western folklore.
