Five U.S. Army soldiers press into an earthen trench, rifles leveled at an unseen target beyond the frame, in this real photo postcard produced by Walter H. Horne of El Paso, Texas. The image captures a Border War-era tactical scene along the Texas-Mexico frontier, circa 1910–1919. Horne arrived in El Paso and built a business selling postcards of battles and other scenes related to the conflict, and this card is a characteristic example of his commercially distributed military imagery.

The soldiers wear broad-brimmed campaign hats and full field kit, including cartridge belts and haversacks visible on the figures at left. All five men face away from the camera, rifles extended in a tight firing line along the lip of the trench, with scrubby desert brush rising behind them. The earthen walls of the trench are sharply defined against the pale sky, giving the composition a strong diagonal tension.

The Mexican Border War refers to a series of military engagements between the United States military and several Mexican factions in the border region during the Mexican Revolution, during which the U.S. Army was stationed in force along the border from 1910 onward. Much of the fighting involved the Texas Ranger Division, but the U.S. Army also engaged in small unit actions with bands of raider groups, making scenes like this one among the most commercially sought-after subjects of Horne's postcard output.
