The 1st Indian Fair at Dulce, New Mexico, 1916, is documented in this panoramic real photo postcard printed on Velox paper stock, the publisher's imprint visible on the reverse. The wide-format image captures an extraordinary convergence of people, animals, and transportation at what was almost certainly the inaugural fair organized for the Jicarilla Apache Nation at their agency headquarters in Dulce. A long passenger train, comprising at least five visible railroad cars, stretches across the middle distance with mesa terrain rising behind it.

Dozens of figures populate the foreground in a mix of dress: a suited man stands with his back to the camera at left, riders on horseback occupy the center, and a wagon loaded with a large log is pulled by a team through the dusty flat. White-clapboard agency buildings with a small American flag appear at right, and groups of attendees in light summer clothing gather near the structure.

The Jicarilla Apache Agency at Dulce was established in the 1880s, and the 1916 fair represented an early government-sponsored effort to promote Jicarilla agriculture and livestock among reservation communities in northern New Mexico. The inscription in the image reads "1st Indian Fair, Dulce, N. Mex. 1916." The reverse is a standard undivided Velox real photo postcard back, unused, with no correspondence or address inscribed.
