A uniformed rider astride a well-worn early Harley-Davidson V-twin motorcycle poses before the Liberty Cap hot spring cone at Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, in this gelatin silver print mounted on plain brown board, circa 1920 to 1925. The rider wears a broad-brimmed campaign hat and dark uniform jacket consistent with park ranger or military personnel, and faces the camera with a broad smile. No photographer's imprint appears on the reverse.

The motorcycle shows a V-twin engine, sprung front fork, teardrop-style fuel tank, and rear luggage rack characteristic of Harley Davidson production models of the early 1920s. Liberty Cap, the 37-foot tall dormant hot spring cone visible directly behind the rider, is one of the most distinctive geological features at Mammoth Hot Springs, its pale, striated travertine surface rising steeply against a backdrop of conifer-covered ridgeline.

The combination of an early Indian motorcycle, a uniformed rider, and a named Yellowstone landmark gives this image strong documentary interest at the intersection of early motorcycling history and the pioneer era of American national park tourism.
