Two young men pose astride early single-cylinder motorcycles before a clapboard house in this gelatin silver print mounted on plain dark board, circa 1910 to 1914. The left machine bears an Indian tank badge in the company's characteristic diamond script, and the right machine displays a clearly legible Harley-Davidson tank badge, placing this image at the earliest years of both manufacturers' commercial production.
Both riders wear flat wool caps, dark jackets, and gloves; the machines show exposed single-cylinder engines, loop frames with pedal-assist starting, and upright handlebars typical of road-going singles from this period. The Harley-Davidson's sloping top tube is consistent with post-1912 frame design changes adopted that model year.
Indian and Harley-Davidson were the two dominant American motorcycle manufacturers of the pioneer era, and photographs documenting both marques side by side from this early period carry strong collector interest. Harley-Davidson's earliest production models were all single-cylinder variants, with V-twin models not introduced until 1907 and the singles remaining popular through the early 1900s.
The photograph measures 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 on 5 3/4 x 7 1/2 mounts.
