Large mounted albumen photograph portrait of U.S. Army officer George Crook, shown in uniform in a studio bust-length view. The image is mounted to a substantial card mount and is manuscript-titled beneath the photograph in period ink, “General Geo. Crook.” No photographer’s imprint or studio credit is visible on the mount as shown. The photographic process is consistent with albumen printing, and the formal military portrait style suggests a post Civil War date.

George Crook was a career U.S. Army officer whose service spanned both the Civil War and the later Indian Wars. During the Civil War he served in the Union Army and participated in major campaigns including Sharpsburg and the Chickamauga campaign. His wartime service established his reputation as a capable field commander and led to continued advancement within the regular army after the war.

In the decades following the Civil War, Crook became one of the most prominent U.S. military figures of the Western frontier. He played a central role in campaigns against Native American tribes in the Southwest and Northern Plains, including actions involving the Apache leader Geronimo and the Sioux leader Crazy Horse. His career places him among the most consequential and controversial military figures of the postwar period, bridging the Union war effort and the expansion of U.S. military operations in the West.

The mount measures approximately 11 x 14 inches overall. The verso is blank except for a handwritten number “1758” at the upper right.
