Exceptional original cabinet card photograph of the Manti Temple in Utah, captured by legendary Salt Lake City photographer Charles R. Savage. Taken in the 1880s during the temple’s final stages of construction, the image offers a detailed architectural view of one of the earliest temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The temple’s twin towers rise above the surrounding trees and unfinished grounds, with scaffolding visible near the right tower—evidence of the massive building effort undertaken by Mormon pioneers.
Savage’s composition is carefully framed by two trees and a low stone wall in the foreground, creating a sense of balance and scale while highlighting the grandeur of the limestone structure against the arid backdrop of central Utah. The clear inscription in the lower right reads “Manti Temple, Utah,” in white ink applied directly to the negative—a hallmark of Savage’s landscape work.
The verso bears the imprint of Savage’s Salt Lake City “Art Bazar,” though much of the typography has been lost to damage and paper loss from previous mounting. Sufficient printed information remains to identify this unmistakably as part of Savage’s celebrated “Views of the Great West” series, which documented the growth of the Mormon settlements and key landmarks from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. Evidence of two gold and silver medal awards remains partially visible under the damage.
