Albumen stereoview portrait of Professor Henry Wadsworth Longfellow seated on a porch in Cambridge. The poet is shown in a relaxed seated pose beside a small table with several books, with architectural details of the porch visible in the background. The mount is printed “Professor Longfellow, Cambridge.” The photograph was issued by the American Stereoscopic Co., Langenheim, Lloyd & Co., Philadelphia, with a copyright line dated 1863.

Portrait stereoviews of prominent literary figures were produced commercially for the stereoscope market during the mid nineteenth century. This example shows Longfellow in an informal domestic setting rather than a studio environment, a format characteristic of early American celebrity stereoviews.

Plain mount with printed title below the images. The verso bears the printed label of the American Stereoscopic Co., Langenheim, Lloyd & Co., Philadelphia, along with later pencil notations.
