Gelatin silver photograph showing an immense cylindrical granite column mounted on a wheeled carriage and positioned before a monumental neoclassical building with a portico of Ionic columns. The scale of the stone is emphasized by the architectural setting and the low placement of the carriage, suggesting a display or staging of the finished piece prior to installation. A sign affixed to the column identifies it as work by the Jones Brothers, a major American granite firm, and provides specifications relating to its size and weight.

The photograph captures the column resting on a specialized transport frame with heavy iron wheels, indicative of the engineering required to move such a massive carved element. The building behind, with its symmetrical façade and pediment, provides a formal backdrop, reinforcing the intended civic or institutional use of the stone. Trees flank the structure, and the composition centers the column horizontally across the frame, creating a strong visual contrast between the raw mass of the granite and the refined classical architecture.

Mounted on its original 10 x 12 inch board with the photograph measuring approximately 6.5 x 8.75 inches. The mount shows handling wear, edge loss, and remnants of prior album or corner mounts on the reverse. A manuscript note on the verso references Jones Brothers and dates the image to 1903. The photographer’s credit to Robert D. Brown of New York appears in the negative.
