Albumen stereoview photograph of the celebrated Russian pianist and composer Anton Rubinstein (1829–1894), photographed by J. Gurney & Son, 5th Avenue and 16th Street, New York. The portrait shows Rubinstein seated at a table reading from an open book, posed in a thoughtful three-quarter profile. The image is typical of Gurney’s refined studio portraiture of visiting cultural figures in New York during the mid-19th century. A contemporary pencil identification reading “Rubinstein” appears beneath the mount.
Rubinstein was one of the most famous pianists of the 19th century and a central figure in Russian musical life. Founder of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and an influential composer and performer, Rubinstein toured extensively in Europe and the United States. His American appearances during the 1860s generated considerable public enthusiasm and produced a number of photographic portraits, including this stereoscopic study.
Albumen stereoview on original mount. Photographer’s imprint printed vertically at left. Minor wear and scattered spotting to the mount and image, with overall good contrast and clarity. A strong and desirable stereoscopic portrait of one of the great virtuoso pianists of the 19th century.
