Albumen stereoview portrait of Anton Rubinstein, photographed and published by J. Gurney & Son, 5th Ave. cor. 16th St., New York. The view shows Rubinstein in a formal studio pose wearing a bow tie and dark coat, facing slightly to the side. The mount and photographic style suggest a late 1860s to 1870s date.
Anton Rubinstein (1829–1894) was a Russian pianist, composer, and conductor and one of the most celebrated virtuoso performers of the nineteenth century. He founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and was widely regarded as one of the leading pianists of his era.
The photographer’s imprint appears along the left margin of the mount. A later pencil identification on the verso reads “Anton G. Rubinstein 1829–1894 Famous pianist and composer Rival of Liszt.”
