Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A ship captain seated in three-quarter view fills this striking half plate English ambrotype, his direct, composed gaze conveying the authority of command. The wet plate collodion process, popular from the mid-1850s through the 1860s, lends the image a tonal depth well suited to the subject, and the gold-ruled oval mat frames the composition to strong effect within a full leather case with crimson velvet pad opposite.

The captain wears a heavy double-breasted wool pea coat over a buttoned waistcoat, a loosely knotted neck cloth at his collar, and a dark fur-trimmed cap. He holds a brass-barreled telescope across his lap, its draw tube extended, and rests his free arm on what appears to be a railing or ledge at his right. Most remarkably, a lightly scratched or painted vignette of a three-masted sailing vessel under full sail is visible in the upper background of the plate, situating the subject unmistakably within his maritime world.

The inclusion of the telescope as the central prop and the sailing ship vignette behind the sitter place this firmly in the tradition of nineteenth-century occupational maritime portraiture, where captains commissioned photographic likenesses to document their professional identity. Such half plate English ambrotypes in intact leather cases with original velvet pads are relatively scarce and represent a premium format within the genre.

The plate measures half plate size, housed in its original full leather case.
