Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

A jockey seated in full racing dress is the subject of this striking English half plate ambrotype, produced during the height of the ambrotype era, most likely in the late 1850s or early 1860s. The collodion positive process first appeared around 1853 and remained a favored medium for studio portraiture through the following decade. The image is presented in a leather case with a richly ornate gilt mat framing the plate.

The sitter wears a two-tone silk racing jacket with a cream-colored front panel and darker sleeves, a small knotted cravat at the collar, and a peaked jockey's cap. The jockey's clothing was light and streamlined, and by convention comprised tight jackets cut to the waist, white breeches, short top-boots, and a peaked cap. He is posed seated on a spindle-back chair with one leg crossed, knee-high black riding boots visible, and a riding crop resting against his lower leg. A patterned floor cloth and plain studio wall complete the setting.

Victorian turf photography is uncommon, and a full-figure studio portrait of a jockey in complete racing silks at this scale and in this format represents a rare survival. During the 19th century, a lighter silk cap in the stable's colours came into standard use, and British depictions of jockeys in full dress are documented as early as 1862. The hand-applied color tinting on the jacket front, adding warmth to the cream silk panel, is a notable feature of this image.

The plate is housed in a full leather case with a burnished gilt border featuring foliate corner and edge ornaments and a rust-colored velvet pad on the interior lid. No photographer's imprint is visible.
