Group of fourteen mid-19th century cased photographic portraits, all in the scarce sixteenth plate size. The images are housed in original hinged cases with gilt mats and red velvet interior pads typical of American cased photography of the period. The portraits depict men and women posed in formal studio settings.
Subjects appear in period clothing including dresses with fitted bodices and men’s coats and waistcoats. Most are individual portrait studies, though the group represents a range of sitters typical of small-format portrait photography of the era. The cases show a variety of embossed velvet pad patterns and decorative gilt mat openings.
The sixteenth plate format is considerably less common than sixth or ninth plate examples and was produced in smaller numbers. All images remain preserved in their original protective cases with intact hinges and interior liners, forming an attractive and unusual group of miniature cased photographs.
