Four unidentified women in fashionable dress fill this half-plate ferrotype, a well-composed group portrait dating to the mid-1880s based on the silhouette of the sleeves, the bustle-era skirt volumes, and the style of the small decorated hats each woman wears. No photographer's imprint is visible. The similarity in age and the relaxed physical closeness of the group suggests friends or sisters rather than a formal social occasion.

Each woman wears a distinctly patterned dress with considerable detail visible in the image. The seated woman at front center wears a dark floral scroll-patterned gown and a small tilted hat, her skirt spread across a fur rug on the floor. The woman seated at left wears a dark dress with a scattered white linear print and holds her hands in her lap. The woman at right sits in a dark bustle-style dress with puffed sleeves and a striped cap. Standing at rear center, the tallest of the four wears a light-colored fitted bodice with a dark bowler hat and looks directly into the lens with a composed, serious expression.

The plain dark background and fur floor covering are consistent with a well-equipped commercial studio of the period. The tintype plate shows light surface scratching along the upper portion and black lacquer edging on the left side.
