An unidentified infant is the central subject of this sixth-plate daguerreotype, a format consistent with American portrait studios of the 1840s and 1850s. The image is a classic example of the hidden mother convention, in which a caretaker conceals herself behind or beside the child to provide stability during the exposure. The plate is housed in its original thermoplastic union case with a gilt brass mat featuring a shaped cartouche opening and an embossed inner border.

The infant wears a full plaid dress with short lace-trimmed sleeves and a white collar, the tartan pattern rendered in sharp detail across the skirt. White stockings and dark ankle boots are visible below the hemline, and a scallop-edged white underlayer extends beneath the dress. The hidden figure's hand and white lace cuff are visible at the infant's left side, steadying the child's hands at center lap.

The hidden mother daguerreotype is among the most sought-after subcategories of early American portrait photography, prized for the tension between concealment and visibility and for what it reveals about the technical demands placed on early practitioners capturing very young subjects. No photographer's imprint is visible on the mat or case.
