Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri was the French photographer who patented the carte-de-visite format, and this albumen portrait of a seated young man is a characteristic product of his celebrated Paris studio. Disdéri opened the largest portrait studio in Paris in 1854 and was tremendously successful throughout the 1850s and 1860s, placing this CDV firmly within one of the most sought-after photographic imprints of the Second Empire era.

The subject is a young man of perhaps thirty years, seated in a three-quarter view with his hands loosely clasped at his lap. He wears a dark frock coat over a fitted waistcoat, with a white shirt and large silk bow tie that falls open at the chest. His dark, loosely curling hair is full at the crown, and he wears a close-trimmed mustache and a small chin beard. His gaze turns slightly off-camera with a composed, direct expression against a plain warm-toned studio ground.

At the pinnacle of his career Disdéri was extremely wealthy and renowned, and his studio attracted sitters from the highest levels of Parisian society. Disdéri's cartes de visite measured approximately 6 x 9 cm and were produced using a camera with four lenses and a sliding plate holder, a process that made polished portraiture of this quality both repeatable and affordable on a mass scale.

The imprint "DISDÉRI, PHOTO." appears printed within the upper border of the mount face, with "DISDÉRI" repeated in the lower left corner. No reverse inscription or additional markings are visible. No dimensions were provided by the seller.
